FAQ

Below you will find answers to a lot of the questions we get asked as a band – hopefully they will answer some of your questions

FAQ

  • How much do you charge ?

Contact us for a personal quote for your event.

  • How long do you need to set up?

At an absolute minimum, we can set up 1 hr before we are due to play. As a band, we do practise the setting up and dismantling of our PA equipment to make this as efficient as possible

We do request , where possible, that we can set up earlier in the day, when there are no guests around, for approximately an hour. This time ensures that your sound is of highest quality, and doesn’t disrupt your guests.

We ask this as sound check can be disruptive to other proceedings in the room, and may include feedback, as every venue has different acoustic properties

Because of the above reasons, we include an afternoon (2pm onwards) set up in our standard pricing.

Please also consider that if your venue is hard to access, we may need additional time – eg if we need to carry equipment across grass/soft ground, or up several flights of stairs or in a lift etc

  • How long do you need to pack away at the end of the night

We can typically take everything down and exit a venue in 30 minutes, assuming good access

  • Are you able to supply music when you are not playing? Can we use your PA for CDs (or iPod) when you are not playing? Would we need to supply CD player or appropriate connecting cables?

We provide a DJ playlist designed to complement and contrast the bands set list, which we will play before, between and after playing (until we have to take down the equipment)

You are welcome to provide your own music instead, whether that be on CD, spotify, minidisk, etc – but we would ask that you provide the equipment to play it – we have a standard 3.5mm input (‘Aux lead’) that you can plug into

  • Can I play my first dance through your PA system?

    Of Course!
Whilst we would be more than happy to perform your first dance for you, sometimes a recording is a preferred way – perhaps you have a special DJ mash up , a recording from a loved one , etc

We’d ask that you provide us with a device (to plug into a 3.5mm jack/Aux Connection) with a copy (or ideally 2 devices with a copy on each!) of the recording when we arrive.
We also ask that you provide us with a copy in advance by email, so we have a copy, which we will bring – essentially take as many steps as possible to avoid a disaster

  • Can my Brother/Sister/relative/friend sing/play with the band for a couple of songs?

We are generally happy to accommodate this on a couple of conditions

    • It must be pre-agreed with the band in advance – for insurance, quality, safety and hygiene reasons, we will not be willing to do this on the night.
    • They must provide their own equipment – eg a mic for a singer, or a guitar for a guitarist.
    • Ideally, we would like to practise/rehearse with them once in advance, though we appreciate this isn’t always possible with people living elsewhere
    • We are not comfortable with hosting children
    • Unfortunately, we would have to hold you liable for any damages caused by them

Ultimately, just get in touch and we can discuss 🙂

  • Can we use your PA for speeches?

Yes, provided we have set up and sound checked in advance

  • Is your equipment PAT Tested?

Yes, we get our equipment tested regularly, plus our bassist is an electronics engineer able to carry out PAT tests.

  • Do you have Public Liability Insurance (PLI)?

Yes, we have up to £5m Public Liability Insurance through AMPBand. Please contact us if you require a certificate of insurance.

  • Do I need a music license?

Normally, the venue will require a license for all music. This is usually arranged through PRS.

The venue may also require an entertainment license – you can check the government website here for information

  • Are you able to play if my venue has a sound limiter?

Many venues have a sound limiter as part of their entertainment license. A sound limiter is a device that cuts power to sockets when the volume goes over a threshold.

This can bring a performance to a very abrupt end, and can cause damage to our equipment.

We have worked with sound limiters on many occasions, however, we do need to know in advance so we can make suitable accommodations – these could include using electric drums, different equipment etc.

We are happy to discuss with a venue about their sound limiter and experiences they have had with it, as it really does vary venue to venue.

  • Do you take requests? Will you play my First Dance?

We will learn 2 songs for your event that are not on our ever evolving set list, provided we are booked suitably in advance.
We are also happy to play specific songs from our set list that you like, and we are happy to avoid specific songs if there are any that you do not want to hear (eg if they are associated with a certain time/person/place/etc) – please let us know in advance.

We are happy to play your first dance too – it is best to discuss your requirements with us – eg if you need a strict tempo for a choreographed routine.

Please note we are limited by our instrumentation and vocal ranges, but we will do the best to meet your requirements

  • How much space do you need?

Ideally, the stage area should be 7m (wide) x 5m (deep), however we can work with smaller areas  – get in touch if your venue has a smaller stage or a weird shaped stage !

  • What are your power requirements?

We need a minimum of 4 qty 13 amp 230V standard sockets

In indoor venues, this is rarely an issue (though no one likes long extension leads!)

In outdoor venues, if you are using a generator, please let us know and discuss with us directly – we would need exclusive use of one of the phases of the generator, and would typically need you to have at least a 10kW generator, correctly earthed. Failing to meet this requirement may damage our equipment which thus may render you or your venue liable.

  • What is your cancellation policy?

We require a 10% deposit within 2 weeks of booking/contract being issued to secure the date. The rest of the fee is due no later than 24 hours before the time of the performance

In the event of cancellation by the Client, the remaining fee will be payable on a sliding scale – under 30 days – 100% of the remaining fee, 30-90 days, 25% of the remaining fee.

  • Do you include PA equipment and a lighting rig?

Yes! We carry a high quality PA rig suitable for most venues, and are able to hire for particularly special venues

Unlike many bands, we usually also travel with a sound and lighting engineer.

As a room heats up from all the dancing, and the dance floor gets busy, the sound response of the room changes, and by having an engineer, we are able to respond to those changes and keep the band sounding good and at an appropriate volume

  • Do you charge for travel?

Travel within a 30 mile radius of Cambridge (CB1) is included by default for all quotes.
Depending on distance, we may (at our discretion) include a supplementary mileage cost of £1/mile.

  • Can you work with a hearing loop?

We appreciate that some people are unfortunately hard of hearing and require hearing assistance.
Please let us know if you, or a guest of yours wishes to provide us with a hearing loop, and we’ll do our best to accommodate

There are, unfortunately, occasions where the induction loop equipment can cause interference with musical instruments (it appears to affect guitars particularly) – it does appear to vary very much with each induction device, placement and venue. We wouldn’t know until the sound check if it is going to be possible, but we will do our best.

  • What styles can you play?

We can play any style of music within our instrumentation abilities.

  • How far will you travel

We can travel pretty much anywhere, nationwide or internationally. Obviously, this may incur further costs (such as hotels, flights etc) but just ask us and we’ll see what we can do

  • Will the Band line up be who I see in the videos/on the page

We like to keep our line up consistent and well rehearsed, so for almost all our bookings, the band you see on here is the band you get.
Occasionally, if one of our members can’t make a gig, we’ll bring in a high quality dep, and similarly, we can’t account for illness or other issues that may occur, in which case, again, we’ll bring someone in to make sure your event goes ahead with quality entertainment.

  • What if my timings change after we've booked?

    Just get in contact!
We get it, weddings and such often have a number of moving components and they all need to align – in most cases, it would be no issue, but please keep us up to date with your timetable
